I've been using brain.fm on and off since 2022, and recently I've picked up that habit again. But does it really helps you with work? Let's find out!
What is brain.fm and who is it for?
Brain.fm offers AI-generated music designed specifically for improving focus and concentration.
Unlike traditional music with lyrics that can be distracting, Brain.fm's tracks enhance focus across various types of work.
Subscriptions start at $9.99/month, with occasional deals on annual plans. The investment can improve your work environment by reducing distractions and increasing focus.
Types of activities
As you can see, there're 4 different types of music tracks:
- - Focus 🎯
- - Relax 🍃
- - Sleep 💤
- - Meditation 🪷
And, inside each section, there're several sub-sections:
The app gives you a lot of choice - from music for reading and deep work, to guided meditation and relaxation music. Everyone will find some use case.
- Meditation: Guided and Unguided
- Relax: Recharge, Chill, Unwind, Destress
- Focus: Deep Work, Motivation, Creativity, Learning, Light Work
- Sleep: Deep Sleep, Power Nap, Guided Sleep, Wind Down and "Sleep and Wake"
Meditation
First thing in the morning, before work, I usually meditate for 20 minutes. The cool thing with brainfm is that you can set a timer, and the music stops when the session ends.
Every song in meditation section is only about 15 minutes long, so when it ends, the new one starts. Sometimes, that can be annoying (I don't want to know how much time is left in my session). And, songs can be too intense for my liking, but you can always blacklist the songs that you don't enjoy. Other than that, brainfm is a great tool for meditating.
Deep Work
After meditating, I start working right away.
The "Deep Work" playlist is probably one of the most popular and well-thought ones on the app. Particularly, I enjoy the song "Surveillance". You can just play it, and think that you're like Peter Thiel (fr fr). On a serious note, it helps me to concentrate on the task a little bit better.
I listen to it while I create content, or write code.
Reading and Learning
As an avid reader, I'm constantly switching between my Kindle, MacBook, and physical books. But what stays stable is the music I'm listening while I read.
What makes brain.fm special is its dedicated reading section.
The carefully selected music helps me stay focused for hours without fatigue or distraction.
Does it really help?
I use brainfm every time I need to cut off the distractions - as I'm living with my parents & my two cats, it can get noisy. Brainfm is an ideal replacement for earplugs, and it is a lot more enjoyable. Also, if you don't want to use brainfm specifically, there're a lot of alternatives.
When it comes to focus enchancement, I'm not sold yet.
